Energy Saving Tips to Make the Summer to Fall Transition

With the weather starting to cool down and school kicking off soon, it isn’t too early to start thinking about getting your HVAC system ready for fall. If you take some time now to get ready, you can save time and money.

Here are a few tips to help your HVAC make a cool transition from summer to fall:

Use Your A/C Less When It’s Cooler

While 90 plus degree weather is still a reality for us, we are starting to enjoy milder days. If the weather is in the high 70s/low 80s, start to give your A/C a break and leave it off. If it is still too humid during the day to leave it off, try to leave it off a night. Open the windows and turn on your fans to get a cool breeze in your house without turning on your air conditioner. This is also a great way to keep your home fresh.

Another way to lower your home’s temperature without raising your energy bill is drawing your curtains. By closing your blinds, you’ll reduce the heat coming in warming your home.

Remember to Change Your Filters

A clean filter can help reduce energy usage because your unit will not have to work as hard. You should change your filter on a regular basis, at least once a month. If your filters are looking especially rough in a short amount of time, you might need your duct work professionally cleaned

Get Your A/C Cleaned & Checked Inside and Out

You should keep an eye around your A/C to make sure grass or other debris isn’t crowding the unit. This open space makes sure your air conditioner gets enough air flow to pull in air to cool your home.

With summer winding down, it is also a good time to schedule a clean and check for your AC. If there is a problem, your technician can find it before it grows into a major issue. This will spare you from unexpected and expensive breakdowns in the future.

Install a Smart Thermostat

A smart thermostat lets you program the temperature in your home according to your habits and preferences. For example, you can set your thermostat to a higher temp during the day if you’re away at work, and a lower one when you’re back home. A smart thermostat can also give you energy saving tips specific to your lifestyle. Some models even include reminders to change your filters!

While many smart thermostats can be installed yourself, there are situations when you need to call a pro. If you’re unsure, call Energy Stars Heating & Cooling to give you a hand.

Schedule a Furnace Tune Up

During the first big cold spell of fall, we’ll get dozens of calls from customers with a furnace that won’t start up. Don’t wait until frigid temperatures to see if your furnace works. Call a licensed HVAC contractor for a furnace tune up. A professional will check all of the essential parts in your furnace and clean it as necessary to make sure you’re in top shape for winter.

Consider Replacement if Necessary

Late summer/early fall is a good time to start thinking about replacement if your equipment is older, consistently having issues, or you’re noticing higher utility bills. The weather is not too extreme so you will be able to look for the best contractor without feeling pressured or rushed.

If you have any questions on how you can save money this fall or you need a free estimate on equipment, call Energy Stars. We’re here to help!
